In 2019, Volvo announced that it would release a new electric vehicle every year over the next few years, starting in 2021. This plan begins with the XC40 Recharge, an all-electric version of the automaker's popular compact SUV. As Volvo releases new fully-electric models over the next few years, the automaker seeks to eventually remove internal combustion engines from its lineup altogether.

While ambitious, Volvo's electrification plans leave Dayton drivers with a number of questions. How good is the XC40 Recharge? What is the next electrified Volvo vehicle? And what does Volvo's electrification drive mean for me? This article examines these questions in more detail.

 Volvo Electrification Plans

Volvo has bold plans for the future of its lineup. For example, in the year 2025, the automaker wants the entirety of its sales to be either electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. In 2040, the automaker plans to ensure that the entire production process for all of its vehicles is completely carbon-neutral.

The 2020 release of the XC90 marked the last time that a Volvo vehicle redesign will include an internal combustion-only option. With the XC40, the automaker plans to focus on full electric vehicles, with hybrid variants available on certain models. Volvo currently offers plug-in hybrid variants of its XC90 and XC60 SUVs, S90 and S60 sedans and its V60 station wagon. The XC40 Recharge marks the automaker's first electric-only offering.

Volvo's future plans involve producing all-electric versions of its smaller vehicles, with larger models such as the XC90 available in hybrid form. But even this vehicle, eventually, will be all-electric.

What is the XC40 Recharge?

Volvo uses the Recharge moniker to designate its all-electric and plug-in hybrid models. The XC40 Recharge is a five-passenger compact SUV which is driven by two electric motors instead of a normal internal combustion engine. This means that all-wheel drive is standard on the Recharge.

The powertrain of the XC40 Recharge produces 402 horsepower, with an all-electric driving range of slightly over 200 miles. Volvo's home charging units can replenish the battery in roughly 5.5 hours. Yet in some cases, network fast-chargers can fill the battery from 10% of charge to 80% in only 40 minutes.

The Recharge takes stylistic inspiration from the standard XC40, though with its own unique set of features. For example, the traditional front engine well is now a storage compartment. And the XC40's infotainment system uses Google's innovative new Android Automotive operating system. Yet despite its name, both Android and Apple devices can connect to the system.

Volvo offers many standard driver assists. Highlights include automatic emergency braking with both pedestrian and bicyclist detection as well as adaptive cruise control with a semiautonomous driving mode. The vehicle's warranty extends for four years or 50,000 miles, with battery components protected for twice that amount of time. Roadside assistance is also provided for three years or 36,000 miles.
